Who are we?

SGS Isobar is a subsidiary of SGS Beta. We specialize in complex isotope services for Geochronology, Geochemical Fingerprinting, and Environmental Source-Tracking. We provide a portfolio of specialty laboratory services to organizations across the globe who value high-quality, commercial-grade data. SGS Isobar was initially named as “Isobar Science”.

SGS Beta, founded in 1979 as “Beta Analytic”, provides a portfolio of specialty laboratory services to organizations across the globe. Miami-based SGS Beta’s suite of services includes radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, natural vs synthetic ingredients testing, biobased content testing, renewable carbon testing of emissions and waste fuels, and biogenic carbon testing of biofuels.

SGS Isobar Laboratory

In collaboration with the University of Miami Neptune Isotope Laboratory, SGS Isobar provides Uranium-Thorium geochronometry and high-precision analysis of Strontium (Sr), Lead (Pb), and Boron (B) isotopes using isotope dilution and wet chemistry. The isotope measurement is conducted on a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS).

We specialize in U-Th dating, Lead isotope ratio measurements, 87Sr/86Sr isotopic analysis, and 11B and 87Sr/86Sr environmental source tracking.

All sample preparation is carried out in one of several class-100 laminar flow hoods. Sample digestion and chromatography occurs in a clean-room enclosure within two class-100 trace metal workstations, ensuring both the lowest possible blank and the highest level of safety. All acid consumables are pretreated through a sub-boiling distillation unit.

Analysis occurs on a ThermoFisher Neptune Plus high-performance Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). Instrument frontends/peripherals include an Apex-Q + Spiro TMD desolvating Nebulizer, and a New Wave Excimer 193 nm Laser Ablation system. Additional on-site equipment includes a high purity water system, centrifuge, a muffle furnace, balance/microbalance, ultrasonicator, vortex mixer, drying units and AirClean workstations.
